Fall Nails After 50: Chic Colors and Trends Worth Trying This Season

Because getting older doesn’t mean our manicures have to get boring.

SECOND SEASON STYLE

There’s something about fall that makes me want to change things up a little.

Maybe it’s the first morning that feels slightly cooler. Maybe it’s seeing pumpkins appear everywhere before I’ve even put away my summer sandals. Or maybe it’s simply that fall gives us permission to bring back all those rich, cozy colors we haven’t thought about in months.

And apparently, my nails get the memo too.

I’ve always thought a manicure was one of those small pleasures that can make you feel surprisingly put together. You can be wearing jeans and a simple top, have absolutely nowhere glamorous to go, and somehow a fresh manicure makes you feel like you made an effort.

At this stage of life, I appreciate those little things even more.

But when it comes to nails after 50, I sometimes see the same advice: keep them neutral, keep them short, choose something “age appropriate.”

Age appropriate?

At 50-plus, I think we’ve earned the right to choose whatever color makes us happy.

So rather than talking about what women over 50 should wear, I thought it would be much more fun to look at some beautiful fall nail colors and trends that feel sophisticated, modern, and completely wearable this season.

And yes, there are a few I may be taking straight to my next nail appointment.

1. Chocolate Brown

Brown nails are having a moment, and I understand why.

Think less plain brown and more melted chocolate, espresso, mocha, and warm cocoa. These shades feel rich and polished without being quite as dramatic as black.

They also work beautifully with everything we tend to pull out for fall—denim, cream sweaters, camel, black, olive, and all those lovely warm neutrals.

If a deep chocolate feels too dark, try a creamy latte or caramel shade instead.

Basically, if you could order it at a coffee shop, there is probably a nail color inspired by it.

And I’m not mad about that.

2. Burgundy Is Still a Classic

Some colors simply belong to fall, and burgundy is one of them.

There’s something about a deep wine-colored manicure that instantly looks elegant. It works beautifully on short nails, longer nails, almond shapes, squares—pretty much everything.

I especially love burgundy because it has enough color to be interesting but still feels timeless.

Look for shades described as wine, merlot, oxblood, cranberry, or deep berry.

And no, you do not need to be holding a glass of Cabernet while wearing it.

Although I suppose it wouldn’t hurt.

3. Warm Taupe and Mushroom

For my neutral-loving women, this may be the one.

Mushroom, taupe, greige, and warm beige shades are softer than brown but have more depth than a traditional nude manicure.

They’re understated without disappearing.

I also think these colors are especially pretty if you like keeping your nails short and natural. They give that clean, polished look that works whether you’re dressed for dinner or typing away at home in leggings.

Sometimes simple really is beautiful.

4. Deep Berry and Plum

If burgundy feels a little predictable, plum is a gorgeous alternative.

Deep berry shades have that same richness but with a little more purple or pink underneath. They can be sophisticated without feeling overly serious—which, frankly, is a combination I appreciate more and more.

A dark plum manicure with a cozy sweater and a good pair of earrings?

That’s practically an entire fall outfit.

5. Olive and Forest Green

Green nails might sound adventurous if you normally stay in the pink-and-red family, but hear me out.

Deep olive and forest green can be surprisingly elegant.

The trick, at least for me, is choosing a muted or deeper shade rather than something bright. Think moss, sage, olive, eucalyptus, or dark forest green.

These shades feel seasonal without screaming I HAVE FALL LEAVES ON MY FINGERS.

Unless you want fall leaves on your fingers.

In which case, I fully support your decision.

6. Navy Is the New Almost-Black

I love a very dark manicure in cooler weather, but sometimes black can feel a little harsh.

Enter navy.

A deep midnight blue gives you the drama of a dark manicure while still having a hint of color. In certain light it looks almost black; in others, you see that gorgeous blue come through.

It’s chic, unexpected, and especially pretty with silver jewelry.

7. The Grown-Up Metallic

Metallic nails don't have to mean full-on disco ball.

Although again—no judgment.

For fall, softer metallic shades can be beautiful: champagne, bronze, pewter, rose gold, or even a subtle shimmer layered over a neutral polish.

I especially like the idea of using metallics as an accent rather than covering every nail. A thin gold French tip over a nude base, for example, feels modern without being overdone.

It’s just enough sparkle to make things interesting.

8. The Modern French Manicure

The French manicure has come a long way from the thick white tips many of us remember.

Today's versions can be much softer.

Instead of white, try chocolate brown tips. Burgundy. Navy. Gold. Even a very thin black line.

You can also keep the base sheer or slightly milky rather than opaque.

It still has that classic French manicure feeling, but with a little personality.

And honestly, I like this version much better.

9. Short Nails Can Still Be Fun

Somewhere along the way, elaborate nail art and very long nails started dominating our feeds.

They can look fabulous.

They can also make me wonder how anyone buttons a pair of jeans.

For everyday life, there is something incredibly chic about shorter, neatly shaped nails with a beautiful color.

A soft square, rounded shape, or short almond nail can look polished and modern—and you can still open a necklace clasp without needing assistance.

That counts for something.

10. And Yes, You Can Still Wear Red

I couldn't write about nails without including red.

Classic red doesn't have an age limit.

Neither does bright red.

Neither does dark red.

Neither does glittery red, for that matter.

If you've worn red nails for thirty years and they still make you feel fabulous, keep wearing them.

One of the nicest things about getting older is realizing how many imaginary rules we followed when we were younger.

I'm becoming much less interested in those rules.

Maybe That's the Real Fall Trend

Of course, nail polish isn't important in the grand scheme of things.

But sometimes the smallest rituals are the ones that quietly make us feel good.

A fresh haircut. A favorite lipstick. A new sweater. Painting our nails a color we wouldn't normally choose.

They aren't about trying to look younger.

They're about enjoying the woman we are now.

And I think there's a difference.

So this fall, maybe we try the chocolate brown we've been eyeing. Maybe we finally give navy a chance. Maybe we stick with the same beautiful red we've loved forever.

Or maybe we walk into the nail salon, stare at the wall of approximately 4,000 colors, become completely overwhelmed, and choose the exact same shade we always do.

Because some things apparently don't change after 50.

And that's perfectly fine too.

So tell me: what's on your nails this fall? Are you a classic burgundy woman, a neutral girl, or are you ready to try something completely different?
